جین آستین در داستان غرور و تعصب، ماجرای عاشقانه پرچالشی میان دختری به نام الیزابت از خانواده‌ای متوسط و پسری از یک خانواده مرفه را روایت می‌کند. که پس از کش‌و قوس‌های هیجان‌انگیز و گذر از سوءتفاهم‌ها و بدفهمی‌های بسیار به سرانجامی مطلوب می‌رسد. خانواده بنت چهار دختر دارند که دو دختر آن‌ها جین و الیزابت در آستانه ازدواج‌اند. خانم بنت متوجه می‌شود که به تازگی مرد جوان برازنده‌ای همسایه آن‌ها شده. و به خیال این می‌افتد که الیزابت دختر بزرگش را با این مرد آشنا کند. در یک مهمانی خانم بنت دختر بزرگش را با آقای بینگلی آشنا می‌کند. و طبق انتظارش علاقه‌ای بین آن دو شکل می‌گیرد. اما مرد جوان دیگری همراه بینگلی است که بسیار مغرور و سخت به نظر می‌رسد. این مرد ذهن الیزابت را مشغول خودش می‌کند اما عشقی که به مرور بین این دو شکل می‌گیرد در مسیری ناهموار و پر از دلخوری و سو‌ءتفاهم می‌افتد.
