Jane Austen

Jane Austen was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature, her realism and biting social commentary cementing her historical importance among scholars and critics.
Austen lived her entire life as part of a close-knit family located on the lower fringes of the English landed gentry. She was educated primarily by her father and older brothers as well as through her own reading. The steadfast support of her family was critical to her development as a professional writer.

Her artistic apprenticeship lasted from her teenage years until she was about 35 years old. During this period, she experimented with various literary forms, including the epistolary novel which she tried then abandoned, and wrote and extensively revised three major novels and began a fourth. From 1811 until 1816, with the release of Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1815), she achieved success as a published writer. She wrote two additional novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published posthumously in 1818, and began a third, which was eventually titled Sanditon, but died before completing it.

درباره کتاب Emma

رمان عاشقانه اِما Emma درباره‌ی دلبستگی‌های زنان انگلیسی قرن هجدهم و نشان‌دهنده‌ی سبک زندگی روستایی آن دوران است. اِما وودهاس، شخصیت اصلی کتاب است که با خوش قلبی تلاش می‌کند دلداده‌ها را به هم برساند. داستان با نگاهی به اوضاع و شرایط اجتماعی قرن نوزدهم، خیال‌پردازی‌های اما را شرح می‌دهد. اما که خود قصد ازدواج ندارد، همه‌ی اطرافیانش را درگیر روابط عاشقانه می‌انگارد تا بر اثر وقوع اتفاقاتی رفته رفته طرز فکرش تغییر می‌کند. اما را بسیاری شاهکار جین آستین، نویسنده‌ی کتاب می‌دانند و به عنوان هفتمین کتاب در فهرست 100 عنوان برترین رمان‌های انگلیسی‌زبان توسط «گاردین» انتخاب شده است.

شخصیت های کتاب

اِما وودهاس: دختری زیبا، باهوش و خیالباف که مادر خود را در کودکی از دست داده است و از زمانی که خواهر بزرگتر او ازدواج کرده است، خانم خانه شده است.

جورج نایتلی: مردی سی و شش ‌ساله، دوست نزدیک و تنها یاور اما و تنها کسی است که از او خرده می‌گیرد.

جین فیرفاکس: دختر یتیمی، زیبا و باهوش است که در نواختن پیانو و آواز چیره دست است. او تنها کسی است که اما به او رشک می برد.

هریت اسمیت: دختر جوان و دوست اما که او را تنها راهنما، یاور و غمخوار خود می‌داند. اما نیز از او بسیار پشتیبانی می کند و می کوشد تا همسر خوبی برای هریت پیدا کند.

خانم آنه وستون یا خانم تیلور که سرپرستی اما را به مدت ۱۶ سال بر دوش داشت تا این که با آقای وستون ازدواج کرد. ازدواج خانم تیلور باعث شد تا اما به رساندن دلباختگان به یکدیگر علاقه‌مند شود..

هنری وودهاوس: پدر خودبیمارانگار و گوشه‌گیر دوشیزه اما است که مرتب غرغر می‌کند.

ایزابلا نایتلی: خواهر بزرگتر اما است.
